First to go King's Night Pub, a great south-side live music venue, bikers and all. Then after a couple of months, On the Rocks, a new Jasper Ave venue dedicated to live local music throws in the towel. And lastly after a bad move, Sidetrack Cafe, a long time running local live music venue can't get the numbers like it used to and bites the dust!
RIP!
What is going on?
From what I know about the live music/bar scene the killer is a few things.
First, with the cost for audio/light production, sound guy, 5 band members, and promotional material, it's cheaper for a bar to just have a DJ.
Second, bands deserve to be paid well. It cost them a lot of time and money to practice to sound awesome. But not so good bands have abused Edmonton, played for free or real cheap, assaulted ears, thus lowering the standard for bands.
Thirdly, people are just not as stoked on local music. Why? Amazing things can be done in a studio, altering what a band really sounds like, raising live expectation. The radio doesn't play local music enough, so no one knows the local band songs. And as stated above, crappy bands have deterred customers.
Lastly, there are grubby money hungry promoters out there who are unnecessary middlemen who take from the bands and bars and don’t fill rooms cause they don't do their job, promoting shows.
Support your local music scene...or I'll poke you with this stick!
