This is an older story, but a friend of mine is actually scared to go to Mexico because of some of the tourist attacks there.  What do you think?

Ten times more tourists have died in the US than Mexico over the past decade.

Another point- you're probably more at risk of getting shot or stabbed in either a Calgary or Edmonton bar these days.

With more than a million Canadian tourist visits to Mexico every year- FOUR incidents are going to deter someone from going there? Not me. As the post above said- there's a shooting or stabbing in downtown bars every other weekend... are people warning tourists not to come to Alberta?
Who knows about the Ianieros' situation... two others were hit by cars... and one was caught in an unfortunate crossfire situation... it's not like tourists are being targetted or anything.

Most situations can be avoided.   Simply by watching your back, your purse, your friends, and your mouth.  Not getting too drunk and impairing your judgement.  Not trusting randoms, ethnic or not.  Avoid the rough bars or rough parts of the city and avoid the unlit streets at night.  And don't go looking for drugs from criminals.
This is for Mexico, Calgary or whatever.  I am sick of people saying the bars are not safe in Edmonton.  These situations could be easily avoided unless your ripped off a drug lord or shot his compadre last week.  Just don't get lippy at the end of the night to some stranger... walk away when you get that bad vibe.

Well - I think you're right that the bars aren't as bad as people make them out to be, but they certainly aren't as tame as they used to be.

I remember going to Esmeralda's 15 years ago and there must've been at least 10 fights a night at the bar, but no one ever got hurt.  I'm not sure it would be like that today with 10 fights.  However, I'm with prodigy and I think you should just act like a human and you won't get hurt anywhere.

Funny - but I actually ran into someone who was scared to go to Mexico today.  Weird people I tell you.

I've run into lots people scared to go, but with the wait for a passport who really cares.  Make sure you apply online if you want to lessen the wait!

With the whole passport thing - I don't know what the fuss was about - people who needed a passport should've got one a long time ago - its not like they just sprung it on us.  I can't wait until the lineup for computer chips in your arm is like a year wait.  Arghhh - they're gonna have so much info on us in the next ten years it'll be sick.
