I was in Olds Alberta this weekend, where smoking in Establishements is still allowed, and I have to say it was disgusting.  I had the smell in my hair and clothes the next day. It is awful.
I am so happy to live in Edmonton.
Has Calgary's law come in to effect yet?  How is that going?  Are Calgarians loving it or what?

Nope.  Not until January 1, 2008.

I wish!

But we do have the ridiculous bylaw that you cannot smoke on patios.  You have to actually leave the patio and go over onto the sidewalk to smoke the cigarette.  It makes no sense.

I remember seeing in the summer people smoking right next to the patio and talking to their friends on the patio.  It was kinda funny when you thought about it.

Even though I'm a non-smoker now - I was a smoker then and I liked the change, but lots of people didn't.  I don't have anything to back it up - but I don't think it hurt business as bad as everyone thought.

Calgary's new no-smoking bylaw came into effect Jan. 1- this year actually, but the city gave one-year exemptions to businesses with ventilated smoking rooms, as well as to casinos and bingo halls.

So basically, most places, it is in effect already- I must say it was nice to come home after a night out this weekend and still be able to smell my shampoo!

Tomorrow though... it could all change. A court ruling could see the bylaw extinguished because of a legal challenge by a group of 35 bar and restaurant owners. The group is asking for the same one-year exemption that the bingo and casinos get.

I  see why they'd ask for the same set of rules- BUT I hope the no-smoking rule sticks! Going out has never been more refreshing!

A group in Saskatoon once sought the same reprieve from the smoking bylaw in effect there - they didn't have any luck - although they did postpone it for a couple of years, which might be the basis for this legal action.  From my experience, if you deal with it and implement new ways to deal with it - you will be successful in the bar business despite non-smoking.

I heard the non smoking atmosphere is now attracting people who avoided it in the first place because of the smoke! I like it way better for sure...nice not to have your clothes stink! In my opinion it should have been done a long time ago, since smokers are definitely the minority these days.

I totally like going out more since there is no-smoking. My voice isn't totally gone by the end of the night that way!

SMOKING IS GROSS. It should have been like this a long time ago... I don't understand people who smoke and purposely do that kind of damage to their bodies... let alone allow their second hand smoke to put other people at risk. It's disrespectful to themselves personally, and to everyone else around them.

I wish for those people that smoke that it was so simple to be just gross.

But I am very happy that going to the bar is not the smelly experience it once was!

That reminds me of the new anti-smoking commercials on in Alberta.  They are sure affective.  Have you seen them?  These grossly green, lung- cancered, dying people saying they regret ever starting, and ever smoking.  Hella affective!  Even though I don't smoke, I quit again!
